CPS magnet schools and magnet cluster schools are specialized schools that specialize in a particular subject area and/or pedagogical practice. A number of elementary schools in the district are designated as Fine & Performing Arts and STEAM magnet and magnet cluster schools.
Arts-Focused Elementary Magnet Schools
CPS magnet schools specialize in one particular area (such as Fine & Performing Arts, World Language, Montessori, STEM, STEAM, Dual Language, IB, Scholastic Academies, and Math and Science). There is no testing required for Magnet schools, and most elementary Magnet schools do not have attendance boundaries so students from across the city can apply. In some cases, Magnet elementary schools provide bus transportation to students who live between 1.5 and 6 miles from the school. The Office of Access and Enrollment (OAE) manages the lottery for student selection via GoCPS.
Elementary Fine & Performing Arts Magnet Schools:
- Belmont-Cragin Elementary School (magnet; incubating)
- Franklin Elementary Fine Arts Center (magnet)
- John H Vanderpoel Humanities Academy (magnet with boundaries)
- Walt Disney Magnet Elementary School (magnet)
- Disney II Magnet Elementary School (magnet)
Elementary STEAM Magnet Schools:
- Sor Juana Elementary School (magnet)
Arts-Focused Elementary Magnet Cluster Schools
Magnet cluster schools, like magnet schools, are also specialized by curriculum or pedagogical approach (e.g., Fine and Performing Arts, STEM, World Language, Technology), but they have neighborhood attendance boundaries and accept students who live within those boundaries. Students who live outside of the neighborhood attendance boundaries must participate in the GoCPS application and selection process in order to be considered for acceptance.
