Creativity takes courage.

Welcome to the CPS Office of Arts Education Visual Arts Page!  As the Visual Arts Curriculum Supervisor, I am excited to have a new way to communicate, provide information and resources to support artistic practice.  I have been deeply inspired by the CPS art teachers that I’ve met so far and look forward to working with them to provide greater access to the arts for all our students.

During my numerous roles working with citywide arts programs, I’ve seen repeatedly how the arts can transform and shape young minds, foster independence and build self-esteem.  The arts allow students to take risks, make choices, and communicate their ideas freely while learning to respect the viewpoints of others.

CPS art teachers are doing incredible work, everyday, to help our students grow into thoughtful and engaged citizens.  Their efforts, in the face of many obstacles, should be recognized and supported by our parents, school administrators and by the broader cultural community.

Everyone has the natural ability to be creative.  It is only when this ability is nurtured through quality arts experiences that new doors are opened.  Students exposed to comprehensive art programs today will become the future innovators and architects of our great city.  Please join us in supporting Chicago schools to make this experience a reality for all of them.

Yours in Art,

Nancy A. Cortés
